Gods Of Music Review The New Single "3 Kingz"
First things first, these cats have a turntablist working with them...and I gotta give it up for that. A lot of emcees forget how much better a DJ makes a hip-hop song.
Let's start with the character of these emcees...they have the attitude that early New York emcees like Cool J or a KRS had...that "in your face" underground battle feel. The flow was tight, the lyrics were tight...I would have liked a little more content in the lyrics instead of straight bragging, but they keep you interested nonetheless. I'm not sure which order these kids are spitting in, but the first emcee steals the show, flow-wise. But all three of them have good strong voices and no-one on this track sounds wak.
Whoever sequenced the song did a STRONG job. The samples they are using aren't sounds that haven't been used before, but the structuring keeps them fresh, and the track has a certain movement to it that I liked. It has a kind of a new school meets old school drum line which I really thought was ill, and the snare that was used really emphasized what these cats were saying. Last but not least...a good old turntable hook...I love those!
As far as the recording and mix of the song go.... They didn't reinvent the wheel...but it works.
Overall, I would say these cats have a good underground thing going on. They are probably too loyal to the roots of hip-hop to have any huge commercial success (which to me, is a good thing). But they could definitely get some true hip-hop heads moving...
