Gabe Night Shield didn't leave the Nammys with a trophy in hand Thursday night.
But the Sioux Falls rapper, whose album "Kataztrophik" was nominated for "Best Rap/Hip-Hop Record of the Year," was happy the prize stayed in his musical family.
Shadowyze, a Florida rapper who did some guest work on Night Shield's nominated album, took home the hip-hop award.
"I wasn't really expecting to win anyway," Night Shield said Friday morning from Hollywood, Fla., where the Native American music awards ceremony was held Thursday. "It was cool. I've just been here promoting, handing out CDs. The guy who runs the Nammys, Donald Kelly, told me he voted for me."
In some ways, it might have been Night Shield's coming-out party to the greater Native American music community.
The Rosebud native says Shadowyze and Litefoot - a Native American hip-hop icon who won artist of the year - gave him shout-outs from stage as they accepted their awards. Shadowyze acknowledged Night Shield as an inspiration, and Litefoot called Night Shield a promising up-and-comer.
"Hip-hop pretty much ruled the night," Night Shield says.
Held this year at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, the Nammys are produced by the New York-based Native American Music Association. Seats for the event were $100.
"It was definitely more fun than I thought it would be, just seeing all the artists that I kick it with," Night Shield says. "Hopefully I'll win it next year."
He's working on another solo album that may be out this year.
